Lets talk about The Last Unicorn
Ever since my very first video essay on the Rankin/Bass version of The Hobbit people have been asking me to talk about The Last Unicorn. And finally, after two years, I have finally been able to release this video – so let’s talk about The Last Unicorn! In this video essay, I will break down the production, animation, story, release, and reception to the cult classic animated film The Last Unicorn, which was in turn based on the novel by Peter S Beagle. We will also be breaking down the characters of Molly Grue, Schmendrick the magician, King Haggard, Mommy Fortuna, and of course Amalthea herself, the last unicorn. We will discuss their story, motivations, and development as we discuss what worked, and what didn’t in the fantasy animation.
The film stars the vocal talents of Mia Farrow, Christopher Lee & Jeff Bridges and was created by the Rankin/Bass Productions. I must point out that I had to heavily edit the source material to avoid any issues with YouTube. So if the visuals are not how you remember just keep in mind that I have zoomed, flipped, and bumped up the contrast and saturation from the original film – The Last Unicorn.
