Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning (るろうに剣心 最終章)

– Netflix Movie Review

Directed by: Keishi Ōtomo

Starring:  Takeru Satoh, Kasumi Arimura

Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning (るろうに剣心 最終章)

Synopsis:

Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning (るろうに剣心 最終章) is an adaptation of a Japanese manga series “Rurouni Kenshin” by Nobuhiro Watsuki, but its story differs from the original. The film is a prequel to the other Rurouni Kenshin films and depicts how Himura Kenshin received his cross-shaped scar. It focuses on Kenshin’s past as the assassin Hitokiri Battōsai during the final years of the Bakumatsu and also explores his relationship with a woman named Yukishiro Tomoe.

My Opinion –

Personally, this was my favorite film of the franchise! Keeping all the incredible action that the “Rurouni Kenshin” franchise is known for, as well as revealing crucial character motivations only hinted at in previous films. Carrying a much more emotional plot than the original film and sequels, The Beginning feels very much like a Shakespearean Tragedy that showcases the actor’s nuanced performances.

While viewers more familiar with Western Media may struggle with the pacing of emotional scenes as well as a reliance on flashbacks to explain character motivations and actions, the enjoyable action and memorable set pieces should keep anyone on the edge of their seats!

I would highly recommend fans of anime and manga alike give this film a watch. I believe it is the “Rurouni Kenshin” franchise is a perfect representation of how to accurately and effectively translate animation and graphic novels to Live Action.
